Miter cut - yes or no?

Are you planning to install tile profiles or skirting boards in your house? Have you already considered how many you need and how you want to install them? Because to achieve the best possible result for your rooms, it is usually necessary to cut or join the tile profiles.

Miter cut - yes or no?

You would like Tile profiles or respectively Baseboards laying them in your house? Have you already considered how many strips you need or want to lay one after the other? Because, in order to achieve the best possible result for your rooms, it is usually necessary to cut or connect the tile profiles.

Connect the strips together.

If you want to connect your tile strips or skirting boards, you have two options:

  1. Miter cut
  2. Connectors, inner and outer corners for skirting boards/tile profiles

Cut at an angle.

If you want to cleanly connect two tile strips at an angle, you need to saw both strips at an angle. The two strips meet at a 90-degree angle in the corner. If you cut both strips at an angle of 45 degrees each, so that they fit precisely together, you will get a perfect miter joint.

The important thing with a miter cut is that both tile strips together form the required angle. Usually, a 45-degree cut works, but not every room has right angles. Especially in older buildings, it's more common for room corners to be slightly crooked. There, you have to deviate a little from the standard 45 degrees.

Advantages of miter cut:

  • This results in a uniform, beautiful appearance without any additional connecting pieces.
  • The miter joint increases the contact area, which also increases stability.
  • You save money on additional materials, such as connectors/inner or outer corners.

What should one keep in mind?

Just laid a new floor, but then poorly cut skirting boards ruin the beautiful look?

Good preparation will also make things much easier here. The angle should be measured very precisely – several times if necessary – to ensure it has the correct dimensions. Believe me, there's nothing more annoying than finding out after sawing that the freshly cut strips don't fit exactly.

To prevent this from happening, slow and steady work is very important. The cuts should be made very precisely to achieve a satisfactory result.

Such precise work takes practice. For this reason, it makes sense to practice various miter angles and combinations before starting the actual work.

What tools are needed?

In principle, you can cut a miter joint with any type of saw suitable for working with metal or plastic. It is important that the chosen tool is suitable for the material and that the necessary miter angle can be maintained.

If you wish to use a saw without a fixed guide, we recommend a miter box. A miter box is usually made of plastic or wood and has pre-defined saw guides.

Another tool that makes the work easier is the miter gauge. With the miter gauge you can transfer angles to a workpiece. A gauge is indispensable for measuring the miter angle.

How to saw at an angle – instructions

  1. Measuring angles: Do the groundwork – the correct angle should be measured precisely. Often it's a 45-degree angle, but it's still important to check the exact angle.
  2. Transferring angles to the workpiece: With the miter gauge, you can easily transfer the miter angle to the tile strip. Mark the spot.
  3. Adjusting the miter angle on the saw: Depending on which type of saw you have chosen, this is done in different ways.
  4. Secure the workpiece: Fasten or clamp the tile strip firmly so that it does not slip while sawing.
  5. Cutting a miter joint: Before you cut, double-check all the settings. If everything is correct, work slowly and precisely.

We also offer various accessories for the tile strips in our online shop. From Corners for tile profiles up to The brushed silver skirting board connector includes everything you need. These connectors for skirting boards, or the inner and outer corners for tile profiles, are perfect for connecting two tile strips together.

We recommend our interior corner pieces because they are visually appealing, waterproof, and technically ideal for providing the best grip.

We also have connectors for skirting boards in our range, to match the variant you choose. Miter cut yes or no?

Whether you opt for miter cuts or tile profile corners, both have their advantages and disadvantages. Miter cuts require good, precise workmanship. One small careless mistake and you have to start all over again. With tile profile corners, you naturally have higher costs due to additional materials, but the installation is also relatively simple.

Notes:

In general, the generally accepted rules of technology must be observed!

For all products/materials: The suitability for mechanical and chemical stress must be carefully checked in each individual case before installation. Protect material from prolonged exposure to sunlight.
