Tiles are one of the most popular floor coverings. For this reason, they are now used not only in the kitchen and bathroom, but also find their place of use in other areas of the house. Due to their simple and modern design, they discreetly improve the appearance of a room or the house.
But beware. Laying tiles is often underestimated and many mistakes can happen. Some show up immediately, but some can occur after years and cause fatal damage. Today we would like to list the most common and biggest mistakes when laying tiles.
Tile adhesive
Tile adhesive is often applied too thinly, as it is then easier to comb the adhesive. However, this causes the tiles to start slipping and it must be corrected more often than not, which significantly worsens the overall appearance afterwards. On the packaging there is always a mixing ratio of adhesive to water. We recommend using the lower value. Likewise, failure to observe the drying time can also cause problems, so always follow the instructions for use exactly.
The right preparation
Preliminary work is done carelessly or poorly. Most often they are not considered important and are just done on the side, yet a good substrate is the foundation for a beautiful tile backsplash. You need a flat, even and firm surface. If you don't have this, your tiles won't last long. Tiles will sag and cracks may appear in some places. You can tell unclean rough work by tile edges that stick up, creating an uneven overall look. It's better to check your work with a level and trowel the surface clean, straight and edge-free.
Cutting tiles
Tiles are cut poorly or not at all. In addition to a good tile, the right tool is equally important. After all, without the right tool, the tiles can be poorly processed. Here you should pay attention to high-quality tools to ensure that the tiles do not break. Too many broken tiles will be expensive in the long run. Before cutting, mark the tile with a pencil and make the cut with slow, even pressure. A poor or incorrect (e.g., too small) tile cutter will result in a poorly cut tile and thus an unclean end result. It is better to borrow or buy a professional tool than to have problems with an unclean tile afterwards.
The right choice of tool
Incorrect trowel size. The size of your trowel must match the size of the tile. The larger the tile, the deeper the thinset mortar needs to be. To achieve this deeper consistency, you will need a trowel with deep notches, which will allow for adjustment during installation. Pay close attention to what you are buying in the preliminary work. If you want to lay larger tiles, then it requires a thin bed, which is suitable for "large format".
Arrangement of tiles
The wrong division of the tiles. Preliminary work is the be-all and end-all. Even when laying tiles, you should plan properly in advance. To start all over again is not possible when tiling. Therefore, take enough time to take the correct measurements and then check them. Often it is even useful to lay out the tiles once to see how it fits best. Thus, it does not happen that was previously measured incorrectly and must be repaired with small tile strips at the end. Very harmoniously looks symmetrical arrangement, where you start in the middle.
Hints:
In general, the generally accepted rules of technology must be observed!
The following applies to all products/materials: The usability with regard to mechanical and chemical loads must be carefully checked in each individual case before laying the mat. Protect the material from prolonged exposure to sunlight.
