ET-S: The reliable waterproofing system for tile coverings
In wet rooms, permanent bonded waterproofing systems for tile coverings are subjected to a wide variety of requirements. Floor-level showers with and without splashback partitions, open and closed tub areas, floor drains and wall junctions are divided into 4 classes according to DIN 18534-5, depending on the potential risk of damage. Although this classification makes sense, in practice it can easily lead to confusion as to which specific requirements need to be taken into account, especially when different water impact classes coincide in one room.
ET-S composite waterproofing in detail
To address this problem, DURAL has developed the DURABASE ET-S waterproofing system that meets all the requirements of the standard, regardless of the defined water action class for the area in question. Even if the water action class is changed as part of a renovation or extension, the standard-compliant composite waterproofing remains intact, as DURABASE ET-S also meets the increased requirements up to class W3-I. Our ET-S waterproofing system was specially developed to meet the requirements of DIN 18534-5 for composite waterproofing of interior spaces. It offers a wide range of accessories such as molded parts and sealing tapes to meet the standard requirements up to water impact class W3-1. ET-S can be used to comprehensively seal private bathrooms as well as public shower facilities and commercial kitchens to withstand the stresses of service and spray water. Special components are available for various installation situations, enabling fast yet standard-compliant execution. The range includes sealing membranes, sealing tapes for covering joints and for wall- and floor connections, sealing collars in various sizes and corners (e.g. DURAL ET-S sealing corner) for special areas such as showers and bathtubs.
The system is completed by the DURAL ET-S cut protection tape to protect the seal in maintenance joints. If required, the DURAL ET-S sound insulation strip can be used to reduce noise transmission. An essential component of the system is the DURAL ET-S adhesive sealant, which was specially developed for permanently watertight bonding of the overlaps required by the standard. The DURAL ET-S sealing mat can be laid in the tile adhesive bed just as easily as other mat systems. In order to offer processors maximum flexibility, numerous adhesive brands have been tested and approved as part of the system guarantee. The criteria of the European regulations 022-2 and the requirements of DIN 18534-5 were already taken into account during product development. After extensive testing, ET-S was confirmed with report number 2.1/13821/1088.0.1-2017 that it passed all tests and meets the high requirements.

Even if the water impact class is changed during renovation or extension work, a composite waterproofing system that complies with the standard remains guaranteed, as ET-S also meets the increased requirements up to class W3-I.
Installation
To ensure the effectiveness of the waterproofing, the membranes should be laid first and then the accessory components (corners, sleeves) with Flex adhesive. The order in which wall and the floor are processed is irrelevant.
To comply with the ETA, the system components (including adhesive products) must be used.
- The substrate must be dry, dust-free, load-bearing and level. Any leveling measures must be completed prior to installation of DURABASE ET-S.
- Tile adhesive is applied in sections to the properly prepared and primed substrate using a toothed trowel 4 x 4 mm.
- Place the cut-to-size DURABASE ET-S sheet on top of the adhesive and press down bubble-free. Lay the sheets with an overlap of at least 5 cm. The overlap must be waterproofed with Polymer Adhesive Flex 310 M Classic. Alternatively, lay the sheets butt to butt and join them watertight with ET-S 120-50 sealing tape and Flex 310 M Classic.
- The accessory components corners and sealing sleeves are laid in a similar way. Make sure that there is an overlap of at least 5 cm and that they are sealed with Flex 310 M Classic.
- The tiles can then be laid directly onto the mat using the thin-bed method without waiting time.
