Laying terrace slabs on adjustable supports.

The development of laying terrace slabs

Relocation of Stelzlager DURAL adjustable support FLEXIBAL installation

Previously, laying terrace slabs in thick-bed mortar and with joint mortar was common practice. This created a large, contiguous slab that "worked" in length and width with temperature changes. Over time, this led to hairline cracks where moisture could penetrate. Freeze-thaw cycles widened the cracks, resulting in damage to the terrace.

Today, the development of terrace supports made of soft or hard PVC plastic has increased their lifespan to approximately 30 years. The supports also included the joint cross-member.

Terrace storage

When it comes to terrace supports, a distinction is made between fixed-height supports and adjustable-height supports. The adjustable-height supports and leveling plates you can find with us are both suitable for large-format tiles and natural stone.

Plate racks & pedestal racks

Plate supports are only "adjustable" in height in steps using compensating plates. To ensure a certain variability in height, these adjustable supports can be stacked on top of each other thanks to suitable recesses on the underside of each plate. Instead of a weak point, as with some systems, these adjustable supports can simply be cut through at the desired point.

The adjustable support posts can be perfectly combined with our balcony & terrace profiles . Our DURAL adjustable support posts FLEXIBAL BA are height-adjustable and can be adjusted via thread. With our adjustable support posts and the corresponding DURAL extension piece for adjustable support posts Flexibal BA and the DURAL leveling plate for adjustable support posts Flexibal MB, unevenness in the ground can be easily compensated.

What are Stelzlager?

DURAl Flexibal trestle stand DURAL Flexibal Adjustable Support

Adjustable supports find application in a wide variety of areas. They are most often used for laying terraces or balconies and serve to install a covering that should have a gap from the ground. With adjustable supports, laying terrace tiles without mortar and screed is now possible. The tiles rest loosely on the supports and hold their own weight. Depending on the design, the adjustable supports or terrace supports are rigid or height-adjustable plastic feet made of PVC, which are always placed where four terrace tiles meet.

The non-height-adjustable support feet are actually called plate supports, but the terms are often used synonymously. Plate supports are usually one centimeter high. Unevenness can be compensated for with superimposed leveling plates.

Plate supports or adjustable supports are usually round and have a diameter of 12, 15 or 20 cm. The Flexibal adjustable supports, with their varying heights, allow for easy installation heights of 25 to 185 mm together with the extension piece. Each support consists of a wide base plate, a slimmer middle section, and a top plate as a support surface for the floor covering. To ensure that stones or tiles are securely supported, the top plate has a cross-shaped groove made of four strips. This groove creates an open joint, allowing rainwater to drain through and over the waterproof substrate – frost damage is therefore excluded with correct installation.

What are stilts used for?

The adjustable supports and leveling plates you can find with us are suitable for ceramic or mineral terrace tiles, decking boards, porcelain stoneware/concrete tiles, large-format tiles and natural stone with a thickness of 20 mm or more. Thinner tiles could break due to the hollow space underneath them.

Adjustable support feet allow for a horizontal surface for terrace design even on uneven ground. Additional leveling plates allow for height adjustment, or you can use the integrated height adjustment, where you can screw the top plate up and down on the support foot.

How many stilts are needed and what is the spacing between them?

Each slab rests on four terrace supports, on half-sized supports at the edge, and on quartered supports at the corners. However, for heavy slabs, full-sized supports against walls are also possible, where you simply remove the upper spacers. Depending on the terrace slabs, you need about three and a half supports per square meter. For large slabs or large support heights, you should also place a support under the center of the slabs.

What kind of surface do trestle stands need?

The sub-base must be load-bearing and waterproof. Whether in the garden or on the terrace, you can lay terrace slabs on adjustable supports or slab supports on concrete or tiles, on ground-contact surfaces or on flat roofs. In the garden, the sub-base must be stable and load-bearing.

Since terrace slabs on adjustable or flat supports allow rainwater to pass through their joints, the subsoil must drain this water. The sealing must be protected from damage with suitable means. We recommend using a drainage mat for this purpose.

Advantages and disadvantages of trestle supports

Advantages of stilts

  1. Laying the floor is quick and easy and requires no special tools.
  2. The terraced storage areas allow for horizontal floors even on uneven ground, without any need to fill in material.
  3. With height-adjustable trestle stands, a very individual height adjustment is possible.
  4. You can remove the other flooring on the adjustable supports at any time without leaving any residue. Ideal for rental apartments.
  5. Old soil can be left in place as a base for terrace storage.
  6. You can hide cables or pipes in the cavity under the floor slabs.
  7. The flooring is frost-resistant.
  8. Installing on adjustable supports is one of the most cost-effective installation methods.

Disadvantages of Stelzlager

  1. The acoustics change with the installation using adjustable supports; the footsteps are louder than with fixed-joint terraces.
  2. It's best to make a detailed sketch beforehand so you have enough supports.
  3. The footsteps are louder than on terraces with fixed joints.
  4. On soft ground, the floor can vibrate - even if the plate bearings are height-adjustable.
  5. Thinner base plates can break, especially at build heights above 10cm.

Pillared support rail system

Relocation of Stelzlager Pillared support rail system

Do you want better load distribution and higher stability of the flooring structure? Then we highly recommend the Stelzlager rail system. This system offers extreme time savings during installation and allows for flexible positioning of the Stelzlager heads. What are the advantages and disadvantages compared to self-leveling Stelzlager? You can easily find out more in " Installing Stelzlager - Which system is right for me? ".

Stilt-leg clip system

This clip system is suitable for cladding terrace steps, finishes and platforms. The system is suitable, among other things, as a spacer for wall connections and can also be used with the rail system. It also ensures time-saving installation of ceramic terrace elements and concrete slabs with a thickness of 20 mm. A further advantage is that the clips are made of robust stainless steel.
