Expansion joint profiles for stress compensation

What are expansion joint profiles used for?

Expansion joint profile stainless steel

Expansion joints are necessary to withstand the natural movements of floor and wall coverings due to temperature and humidity fluctuations and to prevent cracks. These movements can be caused by temperature and humidity fluctuations, but also by structural changes in the building or the substrate. Expansion joint profiles are usually used in areas where tiled coverings adjoin neighboring materials such as walls, stairs, or door thresholds, or where different types or sizes of tiles meet. Expansion joint profiles are also used in large areas or rooms, such as in shopping malls, halls, or airports, to absorb movements between the tiles and maintain the stability of the entire tiling system. Overall, expansion joint profiles are an important component of tiled coverings, which not only improve their functionality and durability but also contribute to a professional and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Expansion joint profiles in our product range

Expansion joint profiles are available in a wide variety of designs. You can choose from different materials, colors, sizes, and shapes to meet all your needs. You can select from various profiles: with or without EPDM insert, narrow or wide, for thick or thin-bed installation. We have the right solution for every construction situation!

We offer expansion joint profiles made of stainless steel, aluminum and PVC. Available in heights from 3 to 65 mm.

Expansion joint profiles made of PVC

The larger heights of 30 to 65 mm are only available for the expansion joint profile made of PVC for thick screeds , which is only used in the screed area.

The other heights from 10 to 15 mm cover the most common tile thicknesses. We offer PVC expansion joint profiles in grey and black depending on preference (e.g. , narrow black PVC expansion joint profile ); this naturally has no influence on the individual properties of the profiles.

Expansion joint profiles made of aluminum and stainless steel

We offer expansion joint profiles or movement profiles made of aluminum and stainless steel in heights from 3 to 12.5 mm. They not only withstand mechanical stress very well, but are also durable. These expansion joint profiles are often found in car dealerships or rooms and halls with large-format tiles. If necessary, our stainless steel profiles can be polished again at any time after installation to prevent the metallic sheen from fading. In general, it can be assumed that when using stainless steel profiles, they are very resistant to physical influences due to the massive nature of the alloy itself.

Expansion joint profiles made of stainless steel with an EPDM insert are suitable for floors subjected to particularly high mechanical stress. Expansion joint profiles made of aluminum with an EPDM insert are designed for moderate loads. The specially developed movement profiles made of metal absorb high loads and distribute them evenly to the covering and substrate. At the same time, it reduces impact noise and structure-borne noise transmission.

The ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) liner is one of the high-quality plastics or rubbers. EPDM is resistant to most chemical stresses such as alcohols and acids. Furthermore, it is also resistant to UV light. Even with large temperature fluctuations, there is no need to worry.

Application of expansion joint profiles

They are used, for example, for warehouses and production halls, underground parking garages and shopping centers. Expansion joint profiles are not only suitable for compensating for ground movement, but they also absorb vibrations.

To prevent stains on the visible surface, careful handling of cement materials is necessary. The tile strip must be completely embedded in the thin-bed mortar. Generally, when installing expansion joint profiles, it is said that they should never protrude from the floor, but there should also be no depression. An optimal finish is flush with the floor; therefore, you should always choose strips 1 mm higher than your tiles. Most of our expansion joint profiles are equipped with an EPDM insert, which can absorb movement and thus prevent cracking.

Processing of expansion joint profiles

  1. Select expansion joint profiles according to the adhesive bed thickness and tile thickness. You should always select expansion joint profiles approximately 1 mm higher than the tiles you intend to lay. The adhesive layer under the tiles will then close the gap flush with the expansion joint profile.
  2. Press the expansion joint profiles into the adhesive bed and align them. Match the movement joints from the substrate exactly.
  3. Apply filler over the entire surface of the mounting brackets.
  4. Press the tiles firmly into place and align them so that they are flush with the top edge of the profile, and lay the tiles fully seated.
  5. Leave a gap of 2-3 mm around the profile.
  6. Fill the connection joint between tiles and profile completely with joint filler.
