LED – What is it anyway?

The abbreviation LED stands for light-emitting diode. Light-emitting diodes serve as semiconductor elements that emit various forms of light when an electric current flows through them. The main element of the LED is the semiconductor crystal, from which reflectors capture and amplify its emitted light.

LED strips have become increasingly popular in recent years. Why? LED lights create fantastic lighting effects in homes and apartments and are also relatively easy to install. Another reason is the low price. Unlike in the past, LEDs have become relatively inexpensive.

Today, there is a wide range of LED strips on the market. Whether single-colored or multicolored, countless variations of LEDs are now available. The great popularity of LED strips is due to their simple installation and wide range of applications. They are particularly easy to retrofit as decorative lighting.

Our DURAL LED Strips fit into all our DURAL LED tile profiles . Like the tile profiles themselves, you can cut the LED strips to the correct length to optimally adapt them to your home.

Cut LED strips

LED strips are made up of many small segments. This is a great advantage if you want to cut them, for example. We offer LED strips in 1m, 1.5m, 2.5m and 5m lengths. For easy application, the strips are on a roll, allowing for easy installation.

The LED strip can be cut between two segments and shortened to the required length. The beginning and end of a segment are marked with a cut mark. Our LED strips can be adjusted in 5 cm increments. However, it is important to only cut at the marked points; otherwise, nearby LEDs may stop working.

The place where you are allowed to cut is between the two dashed lines on the copper.

How long is a segment?

Our segment length is approximately 5 cm. This means you can cut the LED strips every 5 cm. Our LED strips have 240 LEDs per meter.

To cut the LED strip to the desired length, a regular pair of household scissors is recommended. However, these should be clean to prevent contamination of the contact surfaces.

What happens if you cut between the cutting marks?

All LEDs within a segment are electrically connected in series. Therefore, if you cut the LED strip outside the cut mark, the LEDs in that segment will no longer light up. Always pay close attention to the cut mark to avoid losing valuable LEDs.

Extend LED strips

Not only is it possible to shorten LED strips, but also to extend or connect them. This can be done, for example, with our DURAL LED connecting cable . This cable is used, for example, in the installation of LED strips on stairs. It allows you to connect the LED strips to each step.

Please note: When connecting strips, it is important to pay attention to the polarity; the markings + and – can be seen on the strip.

Install LED strips

Our LED strips are designed for use in conjunction with DURAL LED tile profiles and DURAL LED covers. Therefore, the installation of the tile profile is clearly the priority. You can then cut the LED strip to size or extend it as needed, depending on the situation.

Before you install or cut the strip, please check first that all the lights work and lay it out as a test. This way you can check if the length is correct and where you need to make any changes.

Bend the LED strip around the corner.

You can also run an LED strip around a corner. However, it's important to note that the strip must not be bent, as this could cause the conductive tracks or solder joints to break.

Attach LED strips

LED strips can of course be used in conjunction with our LED tile profiles, or simply on their own. The LED strips are self-adhesive and stick to many smooth surfaces, such as glass, wood, metal or stone. Before applying, it is important to clean the surface thoroughly.

When installed with the LED tile profiles, the strips can simply be glued into the mounting ledge of the profiles.

Connecting LED strips

To make the whole thing shine, you need the right technology. For that, we have the DURAL LED Connection Set in the range of products. This includes a powerful transformer, a radio receiver to match the control element and the wiring harness required for connection.

Look forward to the first time you switch on the LED elements. The interplay of the individual light effects (dimmable) in particular significantly enhances the room.

Conclusion

LED strips are great. They not only create fantastic lighting effects, but they've also become more affordable. However, combining them with LED tile profiles definitely requires a professional, as installation can sometimes become a little complicated. Nevertheless, we always gladly recommend them. By adjusting the light temperature and brightness, beautiful lighting effects are created, giving the room a very special ambiance.
